To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the APM has dedicated its pages in The American Journal of Medicine in 2004 to focus on several themes regarding the future of academic internal medicine. As part of this effort, the APM has invited several medical leaders to submit articles. This month, Roberto B. Vargas III, MD, Bruce E. Landon, MD, and Martin F.
