Since the department’s beginnings, our research has benefited from close interactions between HCP faculty members and policymakers at the federal and state levels. These partnerships have enabled us to identify research topics critical to policy in present-day health care environments. Our expertise in medicine, economics, and statistics allows us to approach complicated problems related to cost, quality, access, and effectiveness in a rigorous, unbiased, and timely fashion. Our research is supported by grants from the federal government, private foundations, and some endowment funds residing in HCP.
In addition, we have been a leader at Harvard University in developing procedures to ensure compliance with data security requirements for sensitive and regulated research data. We work closely with the Harvard Medical School Office of Research Administration (ORA), Research Data Compliance team and the University Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) to ensure all regulatory requirements are maintained around our research data.
The ORA Research Data Compliance Team was initially started in HCP in 2015 as the Research Compliance Office. As the University undertook measures to comply with the Harvard Research Data Security Policy (HRSDP), the Harvard Enterprise Information Security Policy (HEISP), as well as evolving state and federal laws to protect confidential research information, it was determined that the compliance office should move to the broader Harvard Medical School to support all HMS departments and labs.
