Since every physician needs to know about the health care delivery system, the integrated curriculum at Harvard Medical School requires that students learn about health care policy as part of their medical training. HCP's Essentials of the Profession is a first-year required course at HMS focused on the principles of clinical epidemiology, health policy, medical ethics and professionalism, population health, and social medicine., while teaching students to think critically about medical knowledge and how to understand the social and political contexts of health and health care in the United States.
As part of our teaching mission, several HCP faculty members offer courses in health care policy to undergraduates and graduates at Harvard, exposing students to the basics in the field and setting the stage for further study in a broad range of areas, including economics, statistics, and premed studies.
