Haiden Huskamp, PhD, the 30th Anniversary professor of health care policy, has been awarded the McNeil Faculty Award for Exceptional Institutional Service.
This award is named in honor of Ridley Watts professor of health care policy and department chair Barbara J McNeil, PhD, MD, for her outstanding commitment and service to Harvard Medical School. McNeil has served the medical school in various capacities including administrative, leadership, committees, councils, and task forces. The award was established in 2014 to recognize faculty for exceptional engagement in their institution and service in supporting the missions of their schools. The award is presented to faculty of Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Recipients of the McNeil Faculty Award for Exceptional Institutional Service have made lasting impacts on their schools through service and civic contributions. They go beyond the routine expectations of their positions and provide excellent service to their communities at Harvard.
Huskamp has been a course director and leader in curriculum redesign efforts at Harvard Medical School for almost two decades. She has engaged leaders in medical education at the local and national levels on the importance of educating medical students about health care policy and ways to improve the teaching of health policy at both HMS and peer institutions across the country.
Huskamp’s nominators call her “a national leader in health economics [with] a distinguished career thus far as a researcher and educator” that has consistently provided extraordinary service to the Harvard community and has encouraged others to do the same. In 1999, she co-developed and directed the first health care policy course taught at Harvard Medical School. By 2007, this course had become a required course for all Harvard Medical School students. The course conveys material that is crucial for physicians practicing in today’s health care environment to understand, and is consistently one of the highest-rated courses at HMS.
From 2005-2006, Huskamp served as a member of the Education Reform Committee on Fundamentals of Medicine and co-chair of the Subcommittee on Health Policy and Managerial Sciences. She has served on the HMS Curriculum committee since 2009, and in the past three years has had a key role in the Pathways Curriculum, and notably the Essentials of the Profession curriculum.
Speaking to her strides in research, Margaret T. Morris Professor of health economics Richard Frank, PhD, says that Huskamp “has become a respected expert in mental health policy issues like parity and delivery system reform. Her work on end of life policy is important and touches on a number of parts of the problem. It has also been influential in guiding efforts to reform the hospice benefit in Medicare. Her work on formulary design has been fundamental to understanding the benefits and pitfalls that stem from tiered formulary arrangements.”
Huskamp has also been named the 30th Anniversary Professor of Health Care Policy, an endowment from Harvard Medical School celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Health Care Policy Department at Harvard Medical School.
