Provides information necessary to correctly interpret the results of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) 100,000 Lives Campaign. This article defines the calculation method that the IHI used to obtain their estimate of 122,300 lives saved by thousands of U.S. hospitals in an effort to prevent needless inpatient deaths through improvements in care.
