HIV-2 infection in the United States

To the Editor: Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) was first identified in 1985 in healthy West Africans,1 and it was associated subsequently with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in West Africans and Europeans.2 , 3 One case of AIDS associated with HIV-2 infection has been reported in the United States in a recent West African immigrant.4 We report an additional such case.
