Normand Elected American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow

S. James Adelstein Professor of Health Care Policy (Biostatistics) Sharon-Lise T. Normand, PhD, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in the statistics concentration.

The AAAS Council elects members every year whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.” Nominees have made significant contributions in the world of science in areas such as research, teaching, government, and interpreting science to the public. With this prestigious honor, Normand joins Fellows such as S. James Adelstein, PhD, MD, Paul C. Cabot Professor of Medical Biophysics, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School, and Alan Garber, MD,  PhD, Harvard University provost and the Mallinckrodt Professor of Health Care Policy, and Barbara J. McNeil, MD, PhD, Ridley Watts Professor and founding head of the Department of Health Care Policy.

In her work, Normand has developed analytical approaches for comparing hospitals and physicians using outcomes and process-based measures. She serves as director of Mass-DAC, the data-coordinating center responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting on the quality of care for adults discharged following a cardiac procedure from all non-federal hospitals in Massachusetts. She is director of the Medical Device Epidemiology Network (MDEpiNet) Methodology Center, a public-private partnership aimed at medical device evaluation, where she works on the development of statistical approaches to active medical device surveillance. Normand is also leading an NIMH-funded study to estimate the value of publicly funded mental health care for patients with serious mental illness.
