Health Care Policy is delighted to announce that Nicole Maestas, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Economics and Health Care Policy and Chair of the Department, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) (2024).

Election to the Academy is among the highest of honors in health and medicine, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Maestas was elected for her contributions to understanding the economics of employment, work capacity, and income support for people who are disabled or elderly; for her national leadership in building the evidence base for disability policymaking; and for her contributions to the economics of health insurance for the elderly and people with disabilities.

Maestas joins 89 other regular members and 10 international members elected in this year's class, bringing NAM's total membership to more than 2,400. The newly elected members represent exceptional researchers and leaders who have made significant breakthroughs and advanced health equity across the nation.

As a NAM member, Maestas joins the Academy's mission to provide independent analysis and advice on critical issues in health and medicine while contributing her expertise to the National Academies' work addressing complex challenges in health policy and beyond.
