Michael Chernew Receives Reinhardt Distinguished Career Award
Michael E. Chernew, Ph.D., has been awarded the prestigious Reinhardt Distinguished Career Award—AcademyHealth’s highest honor. This award recognizes visionary leaders whose scholarship and service have left a lasting impact on the field of health services research (HSR). Renamed in 2023 to pay tribute to Professor Uwe Reinhardt, the award commemorates those who exemplify the translation of evidence into meaningful public action.
Dr. Chernew is the Leonard D. Schaeffer Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. A nationally recognized expert, his groundbreaking research has advanced benefit design, payment models, and regulation across both private and public healthcare markets, including significant contributions to the Medicare Advantage program.
As Chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), Dr. Chernew’s leadership has shaped federal policy and health care delivery nationwide. He has also served on advisory panels for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Health Advisors, and the Massachusetts Health Connector Board. Dr. Chernew’s distinguished career reflecting deep commitment to evidence-based reform has received widespread recognition within the health policy community.
