The Value-Based Payment Modifier: Program Outcomes and Implications for Disparities, a paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine by Warren Alpert Foundation professor of health care policy J. Michael McWilliams, MD, PhD, professor of health care policy Alan Zaslavsky, PhD, and former HCP Seidman fellow Eric T. Roberts, PhD, has been named the 2018 AcademyHealth Article-of-the-Year.

This study examined the effects of Medicare’s Value-Based Payment Modifier, demonstrating how pay-for-performance programs like the VM can contribute to health care disparities without improving provider performance on quality measures.

The Article-of-the-Year award recognizes the best and most relevant peer-reviewed, scientific work that the fields of health services research and health policy have produced and published in the prior calendar year. The award was presented at the 2018 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting, held in Seattle, WA in June 2018.
